See The Should Patches

Custom shoulder patches were worn by each Jamboree Troop. Patches for troops from the Mid-America Council followed an aviation theme. Troop 1406 commemorated the Tuskeegee Airmen's Red-Tailed P-51C.

2005 National Jamboree

Every 4 years or so, the Boyscouts of America host a National Jamboree in Washington DC. It is a great event and for many Boy Scouts a once in a lifetime experience as a Boy Scout the boys must be 14 to 18 years of age to attend as a Boys Scout.

The Boys get a chance to tour our nation's capital. See historic places and artifacts. Camp on an Air Force base for a week. There's live entertainment, fun activities, merit badges, patch trading, and more.

Troop 331 had an incredible presence in 2005. The Mid-America Council sent 4 troops from the Omaha Area. Each of these troops were comprised of boys from various troops within the Mid-America Council. Troop 331 contributed boys and adult leaders to 4 troops. We even sent adults who were part of the staff at the National Jamboree.

Months of Preparation

Our adventure begins well over a year before the actual event. Months and Months of preparation go into the planning for attending this event. Scouts must register for the event. Adult leaders sign-up but then undergo a selection process to determine if they can go and what role they are eligible for. Scoutmasters of the Jamboree Troop are carefully chosen. Once the leadership is established, the individual troops start meeting to plan the places they want to see, design the gateway to build, and line-up the equipment they will need. Campouts and events are held to let members of the new temporary Jamboree troop get to know each other since they are comprised of members of various other established troops.

Preparing for the Trip

Touring Our Nations Capital (Washington DC and More)

When the day finally arrives, the members of the troop assemble at the airport. The Scouts are each dressed in their class A uniforms. They have on large duffle bag and one small back-pack. The large duffle bags along with their tents and other gear is loaded on a truck that will eventually meet them in Washington DC. While the truck is enroute, the boys will tour the nation's capital, stay in a hotel, getting by with the contents they have in their back-packs.

The Jamboree

The day 1 of Jamboree is when the truck is ready to be unloaded and the boys start the process of building an incredible tent city. This is where the boys will live for the next week. There are tons of activities and fun things to do.

Gateways

Each Jamboree Troop builds a Gateway to mark the entrance of their camp. Over the years this has become an important tradition and competition for the various troops at Jamboree. It's fun to tour the campsites to see what each troop came up with. The many times the gateways are designed to represent where the troops are from.
