Report on 2003 High Adventure Summer Camp

The Lewis and Clark Summer camp trip was very memorable. The weather ranged from hot and humid to cool and rainy, finishing the week warm and sunny. Troops joined us from all over South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado, all interested in the water front activities.

Thanks to the 2 other full time dads Robin and Ed, and the part time dads, Rex, Randy and Lannie, each dad contributed greatly, for the boys. When spending a full week with the boys in a group this size, you have the opportunity to see a different side of them, it was a very rewarding experience. I was proud of how quickly the boys jelled as a group and respected our senior leadership. We choose Lewis and Clark summer camp because of all the water front activities. The boys realized that different from a swimming pool or small lake, Lewis and Clark Lake is more subject to weather conditions. Totally serene during the warm sunny days, and giving you the opportunity to drink lake water when the breeze kicks up. I recommend the waterfront at Lewis and Clark summer camp for boys at least 2nd year and older, it is quite an experience. The Staff was helpful friendly and sincere.

Merit Badge Report

14 boys signed up for 61 merit badges, popularity ranged as follows:
Motor Boating 13
Fingerprinting 13
Small Sailing 12
Canoeing 7

Followed by Fishing, Radio, Oceanography, Climbing, Forestry, Space Exploration, Wilderness Survival, Photography, Mammal Study, Weather, and Forestry.

2 of 3 Eagle required badges were completed including Citizenship in the World, Environmental Science, and Swimming.

54 of 61 merit badges were completed, The Lewis and Clark Staff was impressed at this uncharacteristically high percentage of completion.

Explorer Awards

The Explorer Awards are earned by participation in various activities in different areas at Camp, and completion of a Service Project. All 14 boys earned the Lewis and Clark Youth First Year Explorer Award. The 3 full time dads earned the Lewis and Clark Troop Leader Explorer Award. Troop 331 was the only entire troop to accomplish this award.

Other activities included:

  • Hernia Hill and Cardiac Hill
  • Canoeing Breakfast
  • Sailing Lunch
  • Beach Party
  • Swimming in the lake
  • And best of all "Challenge Valley" an obstacle course in the mud, good clean fun in the mud!

Super job boys!
