July 20-26 - Summer Camp, Camp Cedars
Report on 2003 Summer Camp at Cedars

Here is a report on how everything went at summer camp. Before I get into the specific numbers, let me say that as a whole the boys were on their very best behavior throughout the week of camp. We had absolutely great weather, which is hard to come by during a July where Nebraska set record high temperatures. We had virtually no disciplinary issues, unless you count the constant "keep your hands to yourself". All three members of my senior leadership were in camp and performed their duties very well. Finally, we were able to get through the week with enough adult supervision. My sincere thanks to everyone who came out for the week, a couple nights, or just during a few days.

Here are the numbers as I have calculated them longhand. We had 51 boys sign up for summer camp. One left early, so I have used 50 boys in my calculations. The boys signed up for 168 merit badges ( a little over 3 per boy on average ). Out of that total, 129 merit badges were completed at camp ( about 2 1/2 per boy ). The merit badges with the most incompletes were Citizenship in the World and Emergency Preparedness. Both of these merit badges have substantial paperwork requirements which seem inconsistent with camp. Next in line was Environmental Science and Fishing. Nobody in the troop registered for the two feature merit badges, journalism or photography. We had boys register for 47 activities in addition to merit badge work. The two most popular were Hunter Safety and Junior COPE, followed in order of popularity by Snorkeling, Advanced Horsemanship, COPE, Kit Fox, Mile Swim and Instructional Swim. I was frankly disappointed by the low number for Kit Fox. Out of 15 first time scouts in camp, only four registered for Kit Fox. Some of the new boys showed the strain of having attempted four or even five merit badges.

The following list of Superstars completed five merit badges in camp:

1. Brian C
2. Joe P
3. Aaron T
4. David W

Honorable mention to the following boys who completed four merit badges in camp:

1. Chas H
2. Jacob J
3. Aaron J
4. Tim K
5. Matt K
6. Sean K
7. Conor M
8. Steve Nelson
9. Jon W
10. Ben W

The boys who participated in Kit Fox completed 32 separate requirements for tenderfoot, second class and first class.

Troop 331 was once again an honor unit with two of the adults receiving scoutmaster merit badge. I have the patches, banners, cards and pictures. I will try to get them to someone for distribution at the picnic.

Scout Master
